Are you looking for high-risk car insurance? If you or your vehicle is considered more likely to be involved in an insurance claim related situation, than you would fall into this category. High risk vehicles would also include cars that were extraordinarily high priced. A Porsche would be considered a high risk vehicle, for instance.
Generally speaking, you'll pay anywhere from 25% to 100% more for a high risk insurance policy than you would if you were in the "low-risk" category.
Many insurance companies won't even insure high risk drivers, and of course the higher the risk becomes, the more difficult it is find coverage. Often, the only option is to purchase a policy through a company that specializes in high risk car insurance coverage. As you might imagine, this is about the most expensive auto insurance available.
If you know you are in the high risk category, but not because you have a difficult-to-insure vehicle, there are some things you can do to start climbing your way back out into a lower risk segment.
The most important factor will be your accident record. The whole idea behind high risk car insurance is to insulate the insurance companies from the costs they incur in paying damages. Someone with frequent accidents is more likely to have an accident in the future.
The next biggest factor is your driving record. It's a pretty good bet that someone with frequent speeding tickets, DUI's on their record, and other moving violations is more likely to be in some kind of situation where the insurer is going to have to pay out.
You might also be able to lower your risk category by finding a voluntary "safe driver" program. These are offered throughout most states, and could lower your risk score.
Having to pay high risk auto insurance isn't something you have to do forever, especially if you're driving a car that isn't terribly pricey. Just keep this in mind next time you find yourself speeding, or about to blow through that stop sign!
